Studio Workshops

I have taught evening and weekend sculpture classes from my studio to small groups of adults for over a decade. I create projects for the students to learn techniques such as stone carving, casting, mixed-media and steel fabrication. To complement the practical skills, I deliver short lectures each week, to provide context and inspiration for their own projects. The students have produced innovative work of an extremely high standard and in 2011 we held an exhibition in at the Lliw Gallery in Pontardawe Arts Centre, Swansea. I have also mentored students who have gone on to study sculpture at degree level.

School Workshops

I have worked as an artist with schools on numerous projects. I have produced sculpture for schools in residence, see Listening Wing.

I was commissioned by Beauchamp Middle School, Bedford. I visited the school and met pupils and teachers to develop a theme with them. Beauchamp School’s location on an estate named from birds gave me a theme, the school ‘houses’ are also named after birds. Each class had its own nature table so I made a sculpture that relates to their environment and I combined those two ideas. I made a seashell on site in a classroom, carved from stone with a wing hidden inside. I took the idea from the folk myth that you can hear the sea in a shell and applied this to learning: If you listen and learn you will find freedom- the wing symbolises freedom gained from wisdom.

In 2019-20 I was lead sculptor on Working Whispers: A creative collaboration exploring Swansea’s industrial heritage. The project investigated this heritage with trips to museums and experiences were shared through ideas using printmaking, dance, song, ceramics and sculpture. Working with pupils from Pontarddulais and St Joseph’s Cathedral Primary schools I focused on the role of ships in Swansea’s copper industry.

Sketches were made from visits to the Hafod Copper Works and Big Pit museum then drawings were embossed onto copper sheet panels creating textured visual panels. The pupils attached their panels onto a metal framework to create a copper boat made from everyone’s work.
